Independent Pharmacists Help Manitoba Children Living With Disabilities Become More Independent

Once again in 2012, the Children’s Rehabilitation Foundation will benefit from the proceeds of Encounter Brand products available at independent community pharmacies across Manitoba.
From today to September 30, 2012, Procurity, a pharmacy distribution and services company owned by Manitoba’s independent community pharmacists, will donate a portion of the proceeds from Encounter product sales to the Foundation. These funds help children like Waverley Leduc get the support and programming they need to lead more independent lives.
Waverley is a typical Grade 2 student, except that she’s diagnosed with Rett Syndrome, a genetic neurological disorder which affects her speech and both her fine and gross motor skills. To compound the challenges for her and her family, she also has a seizure disorder. Waverley and her family are just one of the many families who receive help and support from the Children’s Rehabilitation Foundation. Hundreds more families in Manitoba, Nunavut and N.W. Ontario have benefitted from their ongoing programs and services.
Since 2010 Procurity has been committed to helping the Children’s Rehabilitation Foundation in their fundraising efforts.
“Once again we’re extremely grateful to the shareholders and staff of Procurity for their commitment to helping these children,” says Christine Schollenberg, Executive Director, The Children’s Rehabilitation Foundation. “Last year’s initiative was very successful, so running this campaign another year just continues to enhance our capacity, as well as the quality of programs we can offer.”
“We strongly believe in CRF’s mandate which is why we’re so happy to continue to support this incredible organization,” says Wayne Rivers, President & CEO, Procurity. “Last year, through a combination of Encounter proceeds and staff fundraisers, we were able to generate donationsto the Foundation in excess of $50,000, and this year we hope to be able to surpass that amount!’
Encounter private label products are exclusively available at independent CounterWise Drugmarts and CounterCare Pharmacies across Winnipeg and Manitoba.
About Procurity Inc.
Be fulfilled is Procurity’s mandate and the concept of ‘giving back’ to the community, profession, and industry are deeply entrenched within the organization’s core values. Established in 1978 as United Pharmacists Ltd., today Procurity is the purchasing, distribution, and marketing arm for a network of independently owned pharmacies. Operating 2 retail banner programs, CounterWise Drug Marts and CounterCare Pharmacies, as well as their own line of Encounter Brand Private Label Products, Procurity continues to serve as the voice and vehicle for the security and growth of community pharmacy across the Canadian prairies.

CRF wins Dufresne's Facebook challenge!

CRF has won the Dufresne $1 Million Charity Challenge Bonus interactive social media contest and will receive $5,000 from Dufresne for receiving the most votes on Facebook.

Thank you to everyone who voted for us! With the amazing ongoing support of our donors and volunteers, the Foundation is working to increase our visibility and public awareness, so we can help even more children living with special needs and disabilities.
The contest had Facebook users “Like” Dufresne Furniture & Appliances Facebook page. For each like, Dufresne donated $1, up to a maximum $5,000, to charity. Facebook users then had the opportunity to vote for their favorite charity from the list of original 51 Charity Challenge recipients.
CRF received the most votes. Dufresne was so thrilled with the community’s response, despite ending the contest just short of the 5,000 likes needed to reach the full $5,000, they will still present CRF with the $5,000 charity bonus on April 11th at 4:00 pm at the Children’s Rehabilitation Foundation office at 611 Wellington Crescent.
Earlier this year, CRF received an initial $10,000 from the Dufresne $1 Million Charity Challenge. This money will be used to purchase vital specialized equipment, such as laptops, electronic speaking devices, modified bikes, and lightweight wheelchairs, for Manitoba’s children living with disabilities and special needs.
Through the Dufresne $1 Million Charity Challenge, over $1.16 million was raised for charities in Manitoba and Ontario by challenging the 51 charities to match Dufresne’s original donation of $500,000. Each charity received between $5,000 and $30,000. The Challenge was Dufresne’s way of thanking the community for supporting them for the past 25 years. The BONUS social media event was an exciting extension of this celebration.
Thank you again for everyone who voted for us, and to Dufresne for their generous donation.

Garrett's Story

Today I'm sharing a video about a young boy named Garrett, who lives in a small Manitoba farming town near Dauphin.
Garrett lives with cerebral palsy, and faces many challenges. But his smile and laughter are contagious, and will make you grin yourself. See how Garrett gains strength in his legs by using a special bike bought for him by the Foundation - thanks to your donations.
Please take a moment to watch Garrett's Story. It's just a small example of the children who rely on your generosity, so they can grow, learn, be independent and to be something ever so special - a child.

Here comes ChickenFest!

It's that time of year again - Rotary ChickenFest!
If you've attended before, then you know what a fantastic event the Rotary Club of Winnipeg West puts on. If you haven't, keep reading to find out all the details, and how you can get involved.
What's ChickenFest all about? Well, it's about supporting a worthwhile charity (just like Hal Anderson, the honourary chair does!) and enjoying a fabulous chicken meal (provided by Chicken Delight).
Here's how you can get involved:
1. Between Thursday, April 19 and Wednesday, April 27th, treat your staff to a lunch or dinner for only $15.00 per chicken meal (see the Fax Order Sheet here). Rotary volunteers will be available to deliver the hot meals to your business or home.
2. Come out to the ChickenFest supper on Tuesday, May 1st at CanadInns Polo Park from 4pm - 9pm. Tickets are $15.00 and available from the CRF office. Attend to support the charity, and enjoy a great chicken meal, but stay for the entertainment and the silent auction. Both dine-in and take-out options are available.
Over the past 60 years, the Rotary Club of Winnipeg West has donated more than $1 Million to local and international charities and groups. For more information on the Club, click here.
For the past 3 years, Rotary ChickenFest has supported the Children's Rehabilitation Foundation. This year, the funds raised will go to the Specialized Services for Children and Youth (SSCY) capital campaign to support the creation of the new SSCY building. For more information on the SSCY campaign, click here.

Watch us on CTV Morning Live!

Kris Laudien, co-anchor for CTV Morning Live came by our office last week to film a "Share the Warmth" feature about the work being done at the Rehabilitation Centre for Children. The featured aired this morning.
The 2-minute video features 17-year-old Andrew Fenwick, a client of the Rehab Centre, whose appendix burst when he was 10 years old, and left him only able to move his eyes. It also features one of the Rehab Centre's physiotherapists - Jane Daniels - who speaks about Andrew's progress over the years.
I won't give away the ending - you have to see the whole story for yourself.
Watch it here on the CTV Morning Live website. Scroll down the featured videos listed today, and click on Share the Warmth feature. And leave a comment about what you thought of it.

CRF asks "Where's the Snow??"

The Children’s Rehabilitation Foundation regretfully announces that due to uncooperative winter weather, the 2012 Ride for Rehab has been cancelled for this year.
With such a lack of snow in Biwabik, Minnesota, it just wasn’t possible to hold a proper snowmobile event. We greatly appreciate the support of our sponsors and all the registered riders who committed to attending the event.
The Foundation is offering registered riders the opportunity to put their 2012 registration fee they have already paid toward the 2013 Ride. The plan is to go to Giant’s Ridge next year and do the ride we were not be able to do this year.
Everyone who supported a rider by making a pledge will receive a full tax receipt for their donation (if they haven’t already).
In lieu of the Ride, the Foundation will be hosting a gathering for all registered riders and spouses in mid-March. More details will be emailed to riders as soon as possible. At this event, we will draw for the snowmobile. We encourage riders to continue collecting pledges and hand them in to CRF by February 29th. Remember, for every $250 riders collect, up to $1000, they receive one entry into a draw for a 2012 sled courtesy of Enns Brothers Powersports. After $1000, riders receive 2 entries for every $250 raised.
The Foundation sincerely apologizes for any inconvenience this may cause. We were very much looking forward to Ride for Rehab and spending time with all the wonderful participants, who have become friends over the years. However, we are excited to visit with you at the gathering in March.
If you have any questions about Ride, please contact Erin Kangas, Development Officer at erin@crf.mb.ca.
